Simms History
This business began in 1866 with Thomas Stockwell Simms founding it. Mr. Simms purchased a small broom and brush enterprise with funds as a Veteran from the American Civil War with his bonus and soldiers’ back pay. This business moved in 1872 to Saint John, New Brunswick. Saint John became prominent world-wide for their contributions to shipbuilding.
Thomas Simms underwent many hardships but persisted with a variety of talents. Unfortunately, he tragically lost two wives and also had a horrible factory fire. However, he did not give up and was able to forge ahead despite these tragedies.
Simms loved to travel and traveled to China in the 1900s. He became one of the first brush makers to make agreements to obtain his bristles directly. He took part in the lay missionary movement. As a testament to his determination and generous efforts, the Simms Memorial Baptist Church is found in India with a robust congregation.
Lewis Wesley Simms
In 1908, Lewis Wesley Simms was crowned the company leader after his father passed away. Over the next fifty years, Lewis Simms presided as the President. LW had a powerful presence and commanding personality. The company grew from a regional start to a nationwide expansion. LW developed and marketed automated brushmaking equipment, revolutionizing the industry. Inside the Canadian business community, he obtained national prominence. He was notably the president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce along with the Canadian Manufacturing Association.
He was posthumously inducted into the Industry Hall of Fame of the Canadian Hardware Houseware Manufacturing Association plus the New Brunswick Hall of Fame. Described as a visionary organization leader and master of individual relations, the evidence of the successful company speaks for itself.
Thomas Stockwell Simms III, the great-grandson of the originator, preserved the traditions of reliability and high-quality that the corporation was founded on.
